Is the calculator free to use

Yes, the calculator on the homepage is free with no account or email required. It covers nine materials and lets you enter multiple zones for L-shaped or multi-section areas.

How accurate is the weight estimate

The weight shown is an estimate based on standard dry density figures for each material. Real weight can vary with moisture content and the specific product a supplier carries, so the figure is meant for planning delivery capacity and truck or trailer limits, not as an exact invoice weight.

Why does the same area need a different amount of gravel than mulch

Volume, cubic yards or cubic feet, only depends on area and depth, so it is the same for any material at the same measurements. Weight depends on density, and gravel is roughly seven times denser than wood mulch, which is why the tool calculates weight separately for each material rather than using one number for everything.

What is the difference between the free cheat sheet and the paid planner

The Depth Cheat Sheet is a one page printable reference covering recommended depths and typical coverage, free after providing an email address. The Landscape Material Planner is a paid, more complete document with coverage tables for all nine materials, a weight reference, an irregular bed measuring method, a budget grid by zone, a delivery checklist, and a bagged versus bulk comparison.

How do I measure an L-shaped or irregular bed

Split the shape into two or more simpler rectangles or circles and enter each as its own zone in the calculator; the tool adds the zones together automatically. The same approach is explained step by step in The Landscape Material Planner.

Should I buy bagged or bulk material

For small areas, generally under about one to two cubic yards, bagged material is usually more convenient despite a higher per cubic foot price, since it avoids bulk delivery minimums and is easier to carry and store.
